Hey, picked up a cheap beater last week and the rear tires are pretty worn in the center. They start a constant humming around 50-60 mph and the ride gets noisy, not sure if it also affects handling. I’m not in a hurry to spend money but don’t want something dangerous. Is that just annoying and safe for a few months or should I replace them asap?

Honestly I think it’s more annoying than immediately dangerous, maybe drive it for a few weeks if it’s just a hum and there’s no wobble or vibration. Some people will tell you to replace them right away, but I’m not totally sure that’s necessary unless you’re doing long highway trips. I’d still swap them before any long drive though.

That constant hum would annoy me on every highway trip. I’d be more put off by the noise/ride than actually scared, so I’d probably live with it until I felt like replacing them.

Looks mostly like an annoyance. I had noisy rears once and drove a couple months fine, but I avoided long highway runs.

Probably just that center-wear humming, I think it’s more annoying than an immediate emergency. One simple thing to check is the rear tire pressure, being a few psi off can change noise and wear. Maybe let it slide for a bit if you need to, not totally sure though.

Noise sucks but probably not an instant disaster. Personally I’d live with it for a bit on a cheap beater since new tires aren’t cheap, even though it makes highway driving annoying. Hope it stays just noisy and nothing worse.

I disagree, I’d replace them sooner rather than later, that humming at 60 makes me nervous.

Yeah, I’d be a bit worried. I think that humming at 60 usually means the rubber’s worn and it’s not great for long trips, but maybe okay to limp around short distances until you can sort it.

I think it’s probably more annoying than immediately dangerous, maybe fine for short drives but I’d have them checked when you get the chance.

That noise would drive me nuts on any long drive, maybe it’s mostly annoying rather than an immediate emergency. I think it tends to get worse over time, though I’m not totally sure.

Thanks for the input, folks. I think I’ll tolerate the humming for a few weeks and avoid long highway runs if I can, not totally sure but it doesn’t feel dangerous right now. I’ll get a tire check and swap them when I have the cash.
