I’ve been looking at the ChirpyCharm and wondering about the solar panel. My backyard gets a decent amount of sun but the feeder spot is a bit shaded in the afternoon. Anyone know if the battery still holds up okay or does it die pretty fast without full direct sun all day?

I haven’t tested mine in heavy shade, but it gets dappled sun for maybe half the day and I haven’t had the battery die on me yet. I think it drains a bit faster on cloudy stretches, but it usually catches back up when the sun hits it more directly. Not totally sure how it would do in deeper afternoon shade though.

I’ve got mine in a spot that gets direct sun maybe 4 or 5 hours and then filtered light the rest of the day. Battery has been fine so far, even on cloudy days. Not sure how it would do if it was fully shaded all afternoon though.

Mine gets maybe 3 hours of direct light and the rest is pretty shaded. So far the battery has held up fine for me, I haven’t noticed it dying or anything. I think it just charges slower rather than not charging at all.

I’ve only had mine for a few weeks, but it’s in a spot that’s pretty shaded for most of the afternoon. Hasn’t died on me yet, though I can’t say I’ve really been keeping a close eye on it. Seems fine for now.

I’ve had mine in a spot that gets afternoon shade and it’s been okay so far. Battery hasn’t dropped to zero on me, but I do notice it takes longer to recharge if we get a few cloudy days in a row. Not a dealbreaker for me though.

I’ve got mine in a spot that gets decent morning sun but fades into shade by early afternoon, and it’s been holding up fine so far. I was worried at first but it hasn’t died on me yet.

I’d probably just try it and see. If the battery drains too fast, you could always move it or top it up with USB once in a while.

I’d just give it a shot honestly. Even if it drains a bit faster on cloudy days, you can always plug it in with USB once in a while to top it off. That’s what I do when we get a string of gloomy weather.

I figure if it works fine for a few hours of sun that’s plenty for most days. Mine’s in a spot that gets some morning light and then it’s pretty dim the rest of the time and I haven’t had any issues with it dying.

Honestly I’d just give it a shot. Mine gets a few hours of morning sun and then shade and it’s been fine. If it drains too fast you can always top it off with USB.

The battery lasts longer than you’d think. Mine barely gets direct sun in the afternoon and it still works fine.

Solar charging is what it is. If your spot gets decent morning sun I’d say just try it and see how it goes. Worst case you move it a few feet or plug it in once in a while. I wouldn’t overthink it.

It probably depends a bit on how much morning sun it gets. I think if there’s a decent window of direct light earlier in the day, the battery does okay even when the afternoon gets shady. The USB backup is there if you really need it, but for most backyards it’s not that big of a deal.

That’s kind of where I’m at too. I haven’t bought one yet, but I’m wondering if the solar part is more of a backup than the main power source.

I’m not totally sure the solar panel is really meant to be the main power source honestly. I think it’s more of a backup to keep the battery topped up, so if you’re only getting a few hours of direct sun it should probably be fine. The battery itself seems to hold a charge pretty well from what I’ve seen.

I feel like the solar panel is more of a nice perk than something you should rely on completely. The USB charging is there if you need it, so it’s not like you’re stuck if the battery runs low.

Good to know, thanks for the input everyone. I think I’ll just set it up and see how it goes since the morning sun should be enough. If it starts dropping too fast I can always move it or plug it in. Appreciate the help.

Partial shade eats into the charge, but mine still lasted a couple days before needing the USB.
