Do I really need to pair smart lights with a hub or not?

I keep reading conflicting stuff about whether these lights need a hub or just Bluetooth. I bought one bulb to test and now I’m stuck trying to figure out if I should get a hub for the whole house or just stick with the app. Honestly I just want to turn off the living room lamp without getting up, not build a whole smart home system.

Honestly, if all you want is to turn off the living room lamp from the couch, just skip the hub. I got one of those Bluetooth bulbs for the same reason, use the app, and it’s fine. No point overcomplicating it if you’re not trying to automate the whole house.

I went with Bluetooth bulbs for the same reason, just wanted to control a couple lamps without hassle. Works fine for me so far, app does what I need and I never had to mess with extra hardware. If you’re not planning to go crazy with automation, I’d say skip the hub.

I think it really depends on how many bulbs you end up with. For just one lamp, Bluetooth is fine, but once you get a few more it gets annoying switching between them individually. I’m not totally sure a hub is worth it for just a couple rooms though.

I’m in the same boat honestly. I just wanted to turn off my bedroom light without getting up, and now I’m deep in research mode over something I thought would be simple. I ended up just sticking with the app for now and it works fine for my one bulb, so I’d say don’t stress about the hub unless you start wanting more lights.

I got a hub mostly because I figured I’d end up wanting it later, and honestly it just works without me thinking about it now. The app alone probably wouldve been fine for one lamp though.

Honestly I just use the app for a couple of bulbs and it works fine for me. I don’t really want to mess with a hub unless I have to. As long as I can turn off the lamp from my phone I’m happy.

Interesting how everyone’s experience seems a bit different on this. I think it really depends on how many bulbs you end up wanting. For just one lamp, the app is probably fine and you’re set.

I think people overthink the hub thing a bit. For just turning off a lamp from the couch, Bluetooth works fine and is way simpler. I wouldn’t bother with a hub unless you start wanting a ton of lights or fancy schedules.

Honestly, it depends on how much you actually want to do. If you just want to turn one lamp off from the couch, Bluetooth works fine until you walk out of range. Once you add a second bulb or want a schedule, the app-only route gets annoying pretty fast. A hub isn’t necessary for basic use, but it’s the difference between a light switch and a remote control.

Thanks for all the replies, that cleared things up. I’m just gonna stick with Bluetooth for now since I only need to control that one lamp. Works fine for me and I don’t feel like adding another hub to my shelf.

Bluetooth gets old fast once you add a second bulb. Hub just works, no fuss. I’d grab one and forget about it.

I used to worry about this too but honestly, for just turning off one lamp from the couch, the app works fine for me. I have a few bulbs around the house and never bothered with a hub, haven’t really run into any issues so far. Having the phone handy is usually enough for what I need.

I think you’re fine just keeping it simple. If the app does the job for that one lamp, no reason to overcomplicate things yet. Maybe down the road if you end up wanting more bulbs it might be different, but not everyone needs a whole hub setup.

Honestly, if you just want to turn one lamp off from the couch, the app is fine. Once you get more bulbs, Bluetooth gets annoying because they all need to be in range of your phone. Hub is overkill for your use case but it saves headaches later if you expand.

I think it depends a bit on how lazy you want to be, honestly. I started with just the app and it was fine for the first few lights, but once I had more than three it did get a bit annoying having to open my phone every time. But for one lamp from the couch, you’re probably fine just sticking with what you have for now.

Pretty much what I figured. The app works for one bulb but once you start adding more it gets clunky. I’ll probably grab a hub eventually just to keep things simple. Thanks for the input, that clears it up for me.
