MemberQuick question. I have a few wine bottles that are a bit wider than standard. Will the WineCork Pro still fit on them? It works fine on regular ones, just wondering if I need to keep a manual opener around for the odd bottle. Not a big deal either way.

MemberStandard bottles only, I think. Wider ones might be tight.

MemberMine still grabbed a slightly wider bottle I had sitting around, so I wouldn’t rush out for a backup opener. It took a second to line up right, but the cork came out fine.

MemberWider bottles are hit or miss with mine. It grabs some and just spins on others, so I keep a cheap manual opener in the drawer anyway. Not worth fighting with it when the bottle doesn’t want to cooperate.

AnnaKParticipantMine didn’t fit on a wider bottle at all. It just sat on top and spun without grabbing anything, so I grabbed the old manual one. If you’ve got a few of those bottles, I’d keep a backup around.

Dave RunnerMemberMine handled the wider bottle I tried, but I still keep a manual opener in the kitchen. I just prefer having it around for older corks anyway.

MemberWider bottles are where these things get fussy. Mine chewed up the cork on one and I had to fish the damn thing out. Keep the manual opener.

MemberThe bottle shape matters less than the neck, in my experience. I’ve got a couple of those squat, wide-bottomed bottles that still taper to a normal neck, and the opener goes on them fine. Same with a fat rosé bottle I grabbed last summer. Where it gets awkward is the odd bottle with a slightly thicker or shorter neck, then it doesn’t seat all the way down and you can feel it hunting for the cork.
I’ve had mine about a year and just keep a basic waiter’s friend in the drawer. Not because the WineCork Pro fails often, it’s more that it takes two seconds to grab the manual one if I’m unsure, versus fighting with the electric one and making a mess. Nine times out of ten the electric one is fine on whatever I pull out. So the manual opener is less of a backup and more of a lazy shortcut.

MemberMine actually fit the wider bottle I tried, but the cork came out crooked and I had to yank it the rest of the way by hand. So yeah, keep a manual one around.

MemberMine fits the wider ones I’ve tried just fine.

MemberI’ve used mine on a couple of those fatter bottles and it did the job fine. The only thing I noticed is you have to hold it a bit more steady so it doesn’t slip off center. Manual opener still lives in the drawer, but more out of habit than need.

Oliver BrooksMemberI’m not convinced wider bottles are a real problem for these. I’ve opened a few thicker ones at friends’ places and the opener grabbed them fine, so maybe some folks just have older or cheaper units. Keeping a manual one around is still smart though, not because of width but because any electric opener can act up eventually.

Luis_A91MemberI’d say just keep a manual opener around anyway. Not because the WineCork Pro is bad on wider bottles, but because you never know what kind of bottle shows up. I’ve watched a friend try his on one of those heavier bottles and it worked, but he had to kind of hold everything steady and it wasn’t the smooth one click thing he gets on normal bottles. For me the bigger question is whether it’s worth the counter space if you mostly open regular stuff. If you already like it on standard bottles, that’s probably the main thing. The odd wider bottle is more of a backup situation than a deal breaker. I’d still keep the manual one in a drawer somewhere.

coffeeandscreensParticipantProbably fine for most, but shapes vary a lot.

RiversMemberThe WineCork Pro doesn’t care how wide the bottle is, it grabs the cork not the glass. The only thing that changes is how steady you can hold the bottle while it works. If the bottle’s too fat for your hand, that’s your problem, not the opener’s.

LunaMemberWider bottles always trip mine up a bit.

MemberMine fits wider bottles just fine.

Tom BillMemberMine slipped right off a wider bottle, so no.

MemberThe base diameter matters more than people admit. I tried mine on a chunky pinot bottle and it wobbled enough that I just grabbed the old waiter’s friend instead. Works on normal ones, that’s it.

MemberMine has handled a couple of those thicker bottles without any fuss, just needed a second to get it lined up straight. I still keep a manual one in the drawer for the weird shapes though.

EthanFreeMemberI don’t have wide bottles often, but the few times I did the opener still grabbed the cork fine. The bottle just felt a little awkward to hold steady while it ran.
