I’m looking into getting a few for the house but I keep seeing advice that says put one in every bedroom and hallway. That seems like a lot. Is that actually necessary or is it just the fire department trying to sell more units? I don’t want to spend money on something that’s just for peace of mind.
I mean, I get what you’re saying, it does sound like a lot when you add it all up. I guess the logic is that if a fire starts while you’re asleep, you want to hear it right away, not from down the hall. Still feels like overkill for a small house though.
I mean, if you’re not a heavy sleeper, one in the hallway probably catches most stuff. Feels like having one in every bedroom is more for total peace of mind than anything.
I think it’s probably fine to skip a few. I’ve got one in the hallway and that’s it, never had an issue. People act like your house is going to burn down if you don’t have ten of them, but mine works fine.
I think the hallway and bedroom thing makes sense if you sleep with your door shut, since smoke might not reach the hallway detector in time. But skipping a few probably won’t cause a disaster either.

I get what you mean, it does sound like they want you to fill the whole house. But honestly, I just put one in the hallway outside the bedrooms and called it a day. Never had a problem with it, and my place isn’t that big anyway.

Unless you sleep like the dead, a hallway one is probably loud enough to hear if something goes wrong. Feels more like a paranoid checklist than a real necessity for a normal house.
