Thinking about getting the Black Falcon Drone but I don’t want to use my phone every single time. Can I just fly it with the remote and skip the phone, or is the phone needed for basic flying? I’m fine using it for camera stuff but not for every flight. Just wondering if it’s worth it if I want to keep things simple.

I kinda disagree with the idea that a phone is mandatory for every flight. I’ve watched a buddy fly his with just the controller for basic stuff, no screen at all, and he was totally happy with it. The phone only really comes into play when you want to see what the camera sees.

I fly mine without the phone half the time, just the controller. You lose the live view and camera settings, but basic flying works fine. I usually only hook up my phone when I actually want footage.

I messed around with mine for a couple weeks before I really figured out my own routine. At first I was pairing my phone every single time because I assumed that was just how it worked, and yeah the live view is nice for lining up shots. But one afternoon the battery on my phone was nearly dead and I couldn’t be bothered digging out a cable, so I just powered up the controller and flew it around the yard anyway. It lifted off fine and responded normally, so that kind of changed how I look at it.

Now I’d say I use the phone maybe half the time, mostly when I actually want footage or want to see what the camera sees. For just buzzing around and getting a feel for the controls, the remote alone is enough. Nothing weird happened, it just flies.

The one thing I’d keep in mind is that some of the camera settings and stuff live in the app, so if you skip the phone you’re basically flying blind on that side. Not a dealbreaker for me, but if you’re the type who wants to tweak everything each flight it might bug you. For keeping things simple though, it’s doable.

I’d probably just get it and fly with the controller only when I don’t feel like messing with the phone. The phone part is more of a camera thing anyway, so if you’re just cruising around it doesn’t seem like a dealbreaker to me.

I actually end up using my phone way less than I expected. Half the time I just grab the controller and go, and it flies totally fine. The only thing that pulls me back to the app is if I actually want to mess with the camera.

I went the opposite direction after a few weeks. I stopped flying with just the controller because the phone is actually the part that makes it fun for me. Without it I was basically just hovering around and doing lazy circles, which got old fast. The live view is what lets me actually frame shots instead of guessing where the camera is pointed. I get wanting to keep it simple, but for me the controller-only thing felt like flying blind. If you genuinely don’t care about photos or video then sure, but if you’re getting a camera drone you’re probably going to want that screen more than you think. I still don’t pair it for quick messing around in the yard, but any real flight I always hook the phone up now.

For me the phone actually became part of the routine. I tried controller-only a few times but kept second-guessing what the camera was pointed at, so I just pair it every time now. If keeping things simple means less gear, that’s one thing, but flying blind got old fast.

Flying without the phone is more of a hassle than people make it out to be. Mine kept drifting because I had no idea where the camera was pointed, so I went back to using the phone every time.

You can fly it with just the remote for basic stuff, that part is fine. But I’d argue the phone isn’t just for camera settings, since without the live view you’re basically guessing where you’re pointing, and that gets old fast. So I wouldn’t count on skipping it completely if you actually want to enjoy flying it.

The phone is basically the screen. Without it you’re just flying blind and hoping the shot is lined up. If that doesn’t bug you, fine, but I wouldn’t call it simple.

I don’t think the phone is a dealbreaker like some folks make it out to be. I fly mine with just the remote more often than not and it’s fine for simple stuff. The camera thing is a separate deal, but for just getting up in the air the controller does the job.

I actually use my phone less than I thought I would. I mostly just fly with the remote and only pull out the phone if I want to grab a picture. Basic flying works fine without it.

I mostly fly mine without the phone unless I actually want footage. The controller handles the basic flying fine, so for just messing around in the yard I don’t bother pulling my phone out at all. It’s only when I care about framing a shot that I clip it on.

I fly mine with just the remote all the time and it’s way less annoying than people here are making it sound. The phone only comes out for me if I actually care about getting footage that day. For just buzzing around the yard the remote is plenty.

I still like having the phone on for the map and battery level, even on short flights. That part is more useful to me than the camera view honestly. So I guess my preference is just keeping it mounted and not messing with it.

I kind of disagree with the idea that the phone is optional for everything. Mine flies fine with the remote, but I still plug in my phone for the first minute just to check battery. Takes two seconds and saves me guessing.

The controller is really all you need for just flying around. I’ve had mine for a couple months and only connect the phone when I actually want to record something. If you’re mostly just messing around, leaving the phone in your pocket is fine.

I don’t really get the whole “phone optional” thing. If you skip the phone you’re basically flying blind, no camera view, no map, and I’d rather just deal with plugging it in than guess what I’m filming. For me the phone is part of the setup, not an extra.

Ended up ordering one anyway, so I’ll find out soon enough. Appreciate all the input, sounds like the phone thing is less of a hassle than I was picturing.
