Does the AerioQ work okay if I just set it on a desk?

I tried mine on a desk for a week and ended up mounting it. It kept tipping back a bit whenever I bumped the table, which got old fast.

Mine has been sitting on a side table since I got it, mostly because I rent and the idea of putting holes in a wall for something I might not even keep bugged me. It stayed put fine. I knocked the table a couple times and it wobbled but never actually fell. The bigger issue for me was where the air ends up going. On a desk it blows more sideways than across the room, so I ended up turning it toward the spot I sit in and just leaving it there. That worked okay. Not amazing, but okay.

What I noticed after a few weeks is that I stopped thinking about it being on a table at all. It just became the thing in the corner making noise and doing its job. So I guess the mounting thing is more about placement than stability. If you can aim it where you want from a table, it does the same basic thing. I never felt like it was fighting me because it wasn’t on a wall. I did have to fuss with the angle more than I expected, but that’s about it. It’s a small unit and it doesn’t need to be up high to work.

I’ll say this though, the tabletop setup looks a bit awkward in a small room. It takes up a spot you could use for something else, which is the whole reason people mount these things. So it’s a trade off, not a free pass.

Mine actually stayed put on a desk for a few weeks, but I ended up moving it because it was way too low to do much for the room. Sitting at that height it just kind of blew at my knees. Once I had it up higher it felt like a completely different unit, so I get why people mount it.

Mine sat on a shelf for a while and it worked, but I eventually moved it up higher because the airflow sort of shot across the room instead of where I was sitting. Stability was never the issue though, that thing is pretty solid.

Mine actually didn’t stay put that well on a smooth desk. The airflow on mine seemed to nudge it around a little over time, especially on the higher setting, so I ended up sticking it on a shelf with a lip instead. Not a huge deal, but I wouldn’t assume it just plants itself wherever you put it. It still blew air fine though, that part wasn’t the issue.

If I didn’t want to drill holes I’d just leave it on the desk and not think twice. It’s not like the wall mount is doing some magic the desk can’t. You just lose the height, which matters more than the placement itself.

Desk placement is listed as supported so it should do what it says. The bigger thing is just giving it some clearance around the back so it can pull air in properly. I’ve seen people sit these right against a wall and then wonder why it feels weak.

Mine has been sitting on a desk since I got it and I haven’t had any of the wandering issues. It just stays where I put it. I think the difference might be what kind of surface you have, because mine is on a cheap desk mat that has a bit of grip to it, and I’ve never once seen it shift even on the highest setting. So when I see people saying theirs slides around, I kind of wonder if they’ve got it on bare glass or something really slick, because that hasn’t been my experience at all.

The one thing I’d actually bring up that I don’t see mentioned much is where you point it. On a desk it’s sitting lower than it would on a wall, so the air tends to hit you more in the legs or torso depending on how high your desk is. That’s fine if you’re sitting right there, but it’s not going to circulate the way a wall mount up high would. For a home office setup that’s honestly all I need, but if you’re expecting it to cool a whole room from desk height you might be disappointed. It does what it says on the box for tabletop use though. I’ve had mine a few months and haven’t felt any urge to go buy a drill.

Desk use has been fine for me so far.
