Flixy stick and 5GHz wifi, does it matter?

If you’re getting drops then yeah it makes a difference. Mine was on 2.4 for months and had the same random stalls, moved it to the other band and it’s been solid since. Worth a quick look at the router settings if you know the login.

5GHz is the one that actually fixed my buffering, so yeah it matters. If the router is putting it on 2.4 by default, that alone explains the drops. Worth a quick check.

I’ve got a Flixy on the bedroom TV and it does grab the 5GHz band on its own, but only when I’m in the same room as the router basically. Once I moved it to the back bedroom it kept flipping over to 2.4 and that’s when I started noticing the little pauses during shows. Not huge, just a blip here and there. What surprised me was that it wasn’t really about speed, more that the 2.4 signal in my house gets crowded with everything else, doorbell, baby monitor, all that stuff. So even though the stick showed a decent connection it would still stutter now and then. I ended up just leaving it and living with the occasional hiccup since it’s only the spare room. If yours is doing the same thing I’d at least peek at which band it’s actually on before changing anything else.

Everyone keeps saying 5GHz is the fix but that’s not always true. Mine sat on 5GHz for a while and honestly the drops were worse because the signal had to go through two walls to get to the TV. The 2.4 band is slower on paper but it actually holds a stable connection better at range. I switched mine back to 2.4 and the random stalls mostly stopped. So before you go digging through router settings, think about where the router actually sits compared to that guest room. If there’s a decent distance or a wall or two in between, forcing it onto 5GHz could just make things worse. The stick doesn’t need crazy speed for streaming anyway.

5GHz made a real difference for mine. The Flixy was fine on the old band, then I moved it over and the little stutters basically stopped. I’d say it’s worth poking around your router if the stick is sitting close enough to get a decent signal.

If you’re getting drops on a stick that’s probably parked on 2.4, moving it to 5GHz is worth a shot. Mine stopped hiccuping once I split the bands, though you lose a bit of range. Just check the router page and see where it’s actually sitting.

Just check if it’s on 2.4 in the settings.
