Thinking about picking up a SawShark for sharpening my chainsaw chain at home. I’ve never used a guided sharpener before, so I’m wondering if it’s actually easier than just using a file freehand. Anyone here find it makes a real difference or is it mostly hype?

Works fine for me. I picked one up a while back and it does what it’s supposed to do without much fuss. Not really a game changer, just easier than messing with a file by hand.

I think it’s fine for a beginner but it’s not like it’ll magically make your chain perfect. The guided part helps a little with consistency but you still have to pay attention to what you’re doing. It’s more of a convenience thing than a must have.

I mean it’s a guided sharpener, not a magic wand. If you can’t find the right angle with a file it’ll help, but it’s not like it does anything a steady hand can’t do for free.

I think it depends on how much you care about the learning curve. The SawShark probably gets you consistent results faster than trying to figure out freehand filing on your own.

I think it probably depends on how much you hate trying to get the angle right freehand. I grabbed one mostly because I got tired of squinting at my chain and guessing, and it did make that part way less annoying for me. Not sure if it’s a must have or anything, but it definitely didn’t feel like a waste of money either.

I got one a while back mostly out of curiosity. It does what it says, takes the guesswork out of the angle, but it’s not like it transformed my chainsaw into a lightsaber or anything. I still use it when I’m feeling lazy.

I skimmed through this and it’s pretty much what you’d expect for the price. It won’t turn you into a pro sharpener overnight but it’s fine if you just want consistent angles without thinking about it.

I think people overthink this stuff. If you want a consistent angle without fussing with a file, it’s fine. Not life changing but not a waste either.

I picked one up mostly because I got tired of trying to hold a file at the right angle in bad lighting. It’s not some amazing tool but it does make it a lot harder to mess up the angle, so that’s something. I think it’s fine for a beginner, it’s not like it’s a huge investment anyway.

I’ve got one and it’s fine for what it is. Takes the guesswork out of the angle which is nice when you’re just trying to get back to cutting. Not a game changer but it does the job.

If I were starting from zero and didn’t trust my eye with a file, I’d grab one. It does the angle work for you and that’s really the whole battle when you’re learning. I don’t think it’s a gadget, just a tool that removes one annoying step. You can always go back to freehand later.
