MemberI’ve been thinking about getting a Qinux BlackOptic for night walks, mainly to spot owls and other critters. Does it work well for that kind of thing, or is it more for close-up stuff? I don’t need anything fancy, just something that helps me see in the dark without scaring everything away. Curious if anyone has tried it for wildlife watching at night.

Tom RayMemberThe IR glow spooks owls less than a flashlight at least.

northshoreParticipantBeen using mine mostly for deer in the back field, and the owls show up fine too once you get the focus dialed. The IR glow is subtle enough that they don’t bolt immediately. Just don’t expect to ID a bird from way across a field, the zoom gets mushy past a certain point.

Mike in TXMemberI use mine mostly for just general messing around in the dark, and the owl thing is hit or miss depending on how far they are. The IR light has a range before it starts getting grainy, and owls like to sit way back in the trees. Up close it’s fine. You can pick out eyeshine pretty easy. But if you’re expecting to get a clear look at one perched across a field, you’ll be disappointed. The zoom makes it worse too, gets real pixelated past 2x or so. I don’t think it scares them much though, the IR isn’t throwing visible light like a regular flashlight would. Mine’s been banging around in my truck for a few months and still works, so that part’s solid. Just don’t buy it thinking it’s some serious wildlife tool. It’s a cheap way to see in the dark, that’s about it.

MemberThe digital zoom is the weak point. Anything past 2x gets grainy fast, and owls at distance just turn into blobs. Fine for closer stuff, not great for scanning treelines.

MemberI’d just grab one and try it on your next walk.

MemberThe owl thing specifically is a bit of a mixed bag in my experience. I picked one up mainly because I wanted to see what was rustling around the treeline behind my place at night, and while it does let you see in the dark, owls are not exactly sitting still waiting for you to find them. The couple times I did spot one, it was more luck than anything, just a shape on a branch that I happened to catch. What surprised me more was how well it picked up smaller stuff like raccoons and cats wandering through the yard. So if you are mostly into the general night critter watching, it does the job fine. Just do not expect it to turn every walk into some kind of owl documentary. It is more of a fun tool than a serious wildlife spotting setup, at least for me.

MemberI haven’t tried it for owls specifically, but I took mine out a few times looking for foxes and the IR light seemed to bother them more than I expected. So I wouldn’t count on it being invisible to wildlife. For just seeing what’s out there in the dark it’s fine though.

MemberI take mine on late dog walks and the owls are usually pretty easy to pick out once it’s fully dark. The screen is bright enough that you don’t have to squint, which surprised me. Not a pro optic by any means but it does the job for a casual look.

MemberOwls aren’t really the issue, it’s everything else. I’ve messed with a cheap night vision before and the IR glow spooks way more than you’d think. If you want to actually watch them, half the time you’re better off just standing still and letting your eyes adjust.

MemberIf you’re expecting to actually identify owls at any real distance, skip it. Mine works for stuff in the yard but the second anything is more than a few trees away it’s useless. It’s a cheap digital thing, not some magic window into the dark.

MemberI’ve used mine a few times for general night walks, not specifically owls, but I’d say the main thing to keep in mind is that it’s really an entry level device. It does fine for spotting stuff in the yard or a few houses down, but don’t expect to be picking out an owl perched high up in a tree way across a field. The IR illuminator on these things is decent up close but it fades out pretty quick with distance.
That said, for what you’re describing it might be okay depending on how close you usually get. If you’re walking trails where owls are sometimes low or in nearby branches, you’ll probably see them. It’s lightweight and easy to just carry in a pocket, which matters more than people admit when you’re actually out walking for an hour. Battery has held up fine for me on shorter walks. Just don’t expect it to replace a proper setup if you get serious about it later.

EthanFreeMemberMine has been fine for spotting owls. I take it out a few nights a week and usually pick them up in trees without much hassle. Battery still lasts me a couple walks before I charge it. Good enough for casual stuff like that.

MemberOwls don’t care about IR in my experience.

MemberProbably fine for owls in trees nearby.

MemberOwls are usually perched pretty still, so the 5x zoom is probably the more useful bit here. The IR is really only good out to a short distance before it gets grainy. Fine for a walk, not magic.

MemberGuess I’ll grab one and see.
