MemberWe already have a basic kit for our cat but I keep wondering if we should upgrade to something more serious for longer outages. Like how do you handle meds that need to stay cold or keeping the house from getting too hot? I don’t want to go overboard but also don’t want to be caught off guard. What’s your setup like?

Laura CheckMemberI mostly care about the cat not getting too warm, so I have a small battery fan and I just put a frozen water bottle in front of it. Not fancy, but it helps. For meds I have a little cooler bag with a few ice packs, that’s my main preference over a generator.

MemberI keep their meds in a small cooler with a couple ice packs and just swap them out. That part matters more to me than a fancy kit. For everything else I figure a few extra days of food and water covers most outages anyway.

MemberI’d just pack up the cat and go to a friend’s place.

MemberWe lost power for four days after an ice storm a couple years back. Not a hurricane, just enough ice to take down lines everywhere. We had two cats at the time and I thought we were fine because we had a few days of food and water stashed.
What actually got us was the temperature, not the food. House dropped into the low 50s by day two. One cat just burrowed under blankets and was fine. The other one, the older guy, got stiff and miserable. We ended up basically living in one room with the door shut and a couple of those big candle jars going to take the edge off. Not ideal but it worked.
The part I didn’t plan for was the boredom and stress on them. Cats get weird when the routine breaks. Ours hid under the bed for most of it and barely ate, which is a problem when you can’t just run to the vet.
For meds, we didn’t have anything that needed refrigeration at the time so I can’t speak to that. But if we did now I’d probably just get one of those small insulin cooler pouches and a few extra ice packs. That’s not fancy, it’s just what makes sense.
What I’d tell you is the basic kit is probably fine for a day or two. Past that it stops being about gear and starts being about how much disruption the animals will tolerate.

MemberThe meds thing is the one that actually worries me. Ours are fine at room temp for a few days, so I just don’t bother with coolers and ice packs. If the outage was going to run past that I’d probably just call the vet and ask what to do. Not really a setup, but it’s one less thing to mess with.

MemberLong outages are the one time I think a generator actually earns its keep, but that’s a whole other rabbit hole. My angle is simpler: figure out your real runtime. Most people plan for a day or two and then the outage runs four or five and suddenly the food and water math falls apart. I watched a neighbor go through that and the cat was fine, but they were scraping together cans by day three.
So before buying anything, just count what the cat actually goes through in a week and stock a bit past that. Rotate it so nothing expires on you. That part is boring but it’s the part that actually matters when the trucks can’t get through.
The heat thing I’d leave to people who’ve actually dealt with it. I don’t have a setup worth copying there.

MemberI’d figure out how long you can realistically stay put before anything else. Ours turned into three days with no power and the cat was fine, but I was not, so now I plan around leaving earlier instead of stretching supplies.

Emma JarrisMemberI feel like the temperature side gets overlooked. We had a stretch of 100 degree days with no AC and the cat just sprawled on the bathroom tile looking miserable, so now I just plan to load him up and stay with my parents if it’s going to be hot. Meds and food I can deal with at home, but I’m not going to sit in a hot house with him.

MemberI think the upgrade that matters most is just having enough supplies to not leave the house for a week. We kept a bin with extra food, litter, and a few gallon jugs of water and it covered us fine. The cold meds thing I’d probably just use a small cooler with an ice pack if it came to that.

MemberThe one thing I actually did after a week long outage was set up a quiet spot near the back of the house where the cat could get away from noise and heat. That helped way more than I expected. We moved her bed and a water bowl into the laundry room, which stays cooler than the rest of the house, and just left the door cracked so she could wander in and out. She basically lived in there until the power came back. For meds I ended up using a small lunch bag with a couple of ice packs and just swapped them out every day, nothing fancy. That worked fine for the three days we needed it. I think the bigger thing is just having a plan for where the pet goes if the house gets really rough, like a friend’s place or somewhere with AC. The rest you can kind of figure out as you go.

MemberThe heat side is what I ended up taking more seriously than anything. Last summer ours died for two days and the cat just parked himself in front of a battery fan I had lying around, so now I keep a couple of those charged up and call it good enough. Meds and all that I leave to people with fancier setups.

MemberWe ended up adding a small battery thing for our cat’s insulin and it’s honestly been the one upgrade I don’t regret. Everything else we just kind of figured out as we went. Glad I’m not the only one thinking about the longer stretches though!
