I’m thinking about getting the WaveMax for my living room, but the TV is not right next to a window. I’ve seen some antennas that need a clear line of sight, and I’m wondering if this one is picky about that. Would it still pick up channels if it’s placed a few feet away from the glass? Just trying to figure out if it’ll work in my setup before I buy.

I run mine in a corner that’s maybe 6-8 feet from the nearest window and it pulls in everything I need. The window thing seems more like a suggestion than a hard rule. I’d say just set it up wherever and do a channel scan, then move it if you’re missing something.

Mine’s about ten feet from the nearest window and it still grabs the major networks fine. The window thing gets way more attention than it deserves. I’d say just try it in the spot you want first, moving it around is cheap to test.

I put mine on a shelf in the middle of the room, no window nearby at all. It gets the local channels fine, but I did have to play around with the placement a bit. The window thing seems like more of a suggestion than a hard rule.

It’s kind of hit or miss, honestly. I’ve got mine tucked behind a bookshelf in the corner, probably a good 12 feet from any window, and it does the job for the most part. The main networks come in fine. I do lose a channel or two if the weather is really bad, but for everyday use it’s been fine.

I think the whole window thing gets blown out of proportion. These antennas are more forgiving than the old ones we grew up with. You might have to play around with the placement a bit, like move it a foot to the left or higher up on the wall, but I wouldn’t stress about it being right next to glass. If you have a decent signal in your area, it should pick it up. Just plug it in and run the channel scan twice, that seemed to help mine grab a few extra stations.

I wouldn’t overthink the window thing. I’ve had mine set up on a side table that’s nowhere near glass and it still brings in all the local stations I watch. The first channel scan took a couple tries, but once it locked on, it’s been pretty steady.

Mine is basically shoved behind my TV stand and the nearest window is across the room. It still pulls in the locals without a problem. I think the whole window thing is more of a guideline than a hard rule for this one.

I think the bigger issue is where your local broadcast towers actually are, not where the window is. I’ve got mine set up in a room that faces the opposite direction from the towers, and it still works because the signal bounces around enough. The window thing seems to matter more when you’re in a fringe area or have a lot of hills between you and the towers.

The main thing I’d check is what direction your local stations broadcast from and whether there’s anything big between you and them, like a brick building or metal siding. If you’re in a decent suburban area, a few feet from the glass probably won’t change much. I’d say buy it, run a channel scan, and if you’re short on channels try moving it around during the scan. That’s all I did and it’s been fine since.

Mine is on a shelf that faces the opposite wall from the window, so it’s not even in the same direction. Still pulled in everything I needed after the channel scan. I think the height mattered more than the window in my case.

The window thing seems to get all the attention, but I’d look at what’s between you and the broadcast towers first. I have mine in a room that faces the wrong way entirely, and it still grabs the major networks fine. The walls in my place are older plaster, so I half expected nothing to come through, but it surprised me.

That said, I think distance from the glass matters less than elevation. I had it on a low shelf near a window and got maybe half the channels. Moved it up to the top of a bookcase, still not near any window, and the scan pulled in way more. So if you can get it a few feet off the floor, you’re probably fine without worrying about the window placement. Just run the channel scan a couple of times and move it around until the numbers look good.

I’d probably just try it where you want it first and see what the channel scan gives you. If you get the stations you care about, that’s really all that matters. Moving it a few feet can be the difference, but you won’t know until you actually run the scan on your TV. No point in stressing about the window unless the scan comes up short.

Mine works fine a few feet from the window, but I’ve also got a clear view of the towers from that side.

Not by a long shot. I’ve had mine sitting behind a bookshelf in a hotel room once and it still grabbed the local channels fine. These things are a lot more forgiving than the old school ones, so a few feet from the window shouldn’t be an issue at all.
