I’m thinking about getting a CoolCove for my living room, but the ceilings are pretty high and I’m not sure if it will handle the space. Has anyone tried it in a room like that? I know it covers up to a certain size, but does ceiling height matter?

I was worried about the same thing before I picked one up. My place has those tall vaulted ceilings in the main area and most small units just disappear in there. I figured I’d be returning it within a week.

Turns out I was overthinking it. I don’t need the whole room to be freezing or toasty, I just need the spot where I actually sit to feel comfortable. That’s what it does. It keeps the immediate area around it feeling nice without trying to fight the entire volume of the room. I had it pointed at my couch from across the way and it was fine.

The square footage rating had me skeptical too, but I think that number assumes normal ceiling height. With high ceilings you just have to adjust your expectations. It’s not going to make the far corner of the room feel different, but if you’re sitting near it, you’ll notice it working. I use it mostly in the evenings when I’m watching TV and it does the job.

If you’re expecting it to handle the whole space like a central unit, you’ll be let down. If you just want your seating area to be more comfortable, it should be okay. I kept mine and I’m glad I did.

Tall ceilings are one of those things that sound nice until you try to heat or cool the room lol. I have them in my place and my CoolCove does fine for the area right around it, but if I’m across the room I can definitely tell the difference. It’s not going to magically fill the whole space if it’s super open up there, so just keep your expectations realistic.

I just wouldn’t expect it to work the same all the way up. The unit does what it does near the floor, and if you have a vaulted ceiling you’re basically throwing half the air into space. I’d rather have one pointed at the couch than trying to fill the whole room, but that’s just how I’d use it.

Square footage claims on these things always assume a normal ceiling. Mine are around ten feet in the living room and the CoolCove does okay, but you can feel the difference if you walk from one side of the room to the other. It’s not going to push air up into the rafters or anything like that. It keeps the floor and couch area comfortable, which is really all I care about. The remote makes it easy to adjust when the sun hits different parts of the room. I wouldn’t expect it to cool the whole volume of the space evenly, because that’s just not how these portable units work. But for sitting around and watching TV, it’s fine. If you’re expecting it to handle the full height of the room, you’ll be disappointed. If you just want the spot where you actually sit to feel decent, you’ll probably be fine.

I keep mine on a side table aimed kind of toward the couch rather than mounting it high, and that seems to make a big difference.

I’d say go for it if you’re okay with it working at body level instead of room level.

I got one in a room with two-story ceilings and it’s fine as long as you’re not expecting it to warm the upstairs.

Mine is in a sunroom with really tall ceilings and honestly the coverage rating still felt about right. I think people overthink the height thing. The air comes out strong enough that it gets the space comfortable, just give it a bit longer than you would in a normal room.

I had the same worry when I put mine in our bonus room. That space has a vaulted ceiling that goes up maybe fifteen feet at the peak, so I was fully prepared for it to feel like it was doing nothing. But honestly it’s been fine for how we use the room. We’re not trying to keep the whole volume of air comfortable, we just want the area where we actually sit to feel decent, and it does that.

The thing that surprised me is that it doesn’t seem to matter as much as I thought it would. I think part of it is that the air moves along the floor and around where you are, not up into all that empty space above. So the tall ceiling just becomes kind of irrelevant after a while. I do keep it on a table rather than mounting it high, so maybe that helps, since it’s pushing air at the level where we’re sitting.

What I noticed is that it takes a little longer to feel a change than it would in a normal room, but once it gets there it stays consistent. It’s not like the heat vanishes the second it goes up. I run it while we’re watching TV and it keeps that whole seating area comfortable. The upper part of the room is always going to be cooler in winter, but nobody’s hanging out up there anyway.

I guess my take is that ceiling height matters less than what you’re expecting from it. If you want the entire tall space to feel the same, that’s probably asking too much. But for just making the living area comfortable, I would not let the ceilings stop you.

I’ve got mine in a room where the ceiling peaks around fourteen feet and it’s been fine. The air still reaches where I’m sitting, which is what matters to me. I wouldn’t stress about the height unless you’re trying to condition the whole vertical space.

Mine is in a converted garage that has tall ceilings and it keeps the area around it comfortable. I don’t think the height threw it off much, the unit just works harder when the heat kicks in. It’s not going to feel like a furnace blasting from above, but for the space I’m actually sitting in it’s fine.

I think it really comes down to where you’re sitting rather than the ceiling height itself. I have mine in a spot with tall ceilings and it keeps my corner comfortable, but if I move to the other side of the room I can tell the difference. It’s one of those things where you just gotta figure out if it works for your layout.
