Qinux BlackOptic without an SD card, can you still use it?

It’s not going to refuse to turn on or anything like that. You can still use it for viewing without an SD card, so for just walking around at night it’ll do what you need. The screen works fine on its own.

The thing people don’t always mention is that the menu or settings can be a bit annoying if you’re not saving anything. Some functions might gray out or just feel pointless when there’s no card in there, but the basic viewing mode works. It’s basically just like using a digital scope, you look through it and see the IR image.

I’d say grab a card eventually anyway, even a cheap small one, because once you do want to capture something you’ll have to stop and dig one out. But for your night walks, you can get by without it. Just be aware that the battery is the bigger thing to keep an eye on, using the IR constantly eats it up faster than you’d think.

I’d say get the card anyway when you can, but no, it’s not going to sit there useless without one. I’ve had mine for a few months and there are nights I just grab it without the card in and it’s fine for looking around. The only thing is you’ll kick yourself if you see something cool and can’t save it.

The storage card only matters if you want to save what you’re looking at. For basic night walking, you’re fine. Mine is basically just a fancy monocular most of the time.

I had mine for about three weeks before I even remembered it had an SD slot. I bought it mostly for checking on some noise around my backyard at night, not for recording anything. The first few nights I just took it out, switched it on, and looked through it like a normal monocular. It worked fine. The screen lit up, the IR did its thing, and I could see what I needed to see.

It wasn’t until I wanted to show a friend a photo of a raccoon that kept knocking over my trash that I actually put a card in. Before that, I didn’t even think about storage. The device never mentioned it, never flashed a warning, nothing. It just operated like a regular viewer.

One thing I will say, though, is that if you do decide to get a card later, make sure it’s formatted before you use it. I thought mine was ready to go straight out of the package and the first few shots I tried to save just didn’t appear anywhere. Ended up having to format it through the device menu and then it worked fine. So the card is really only for when you want to keep something. For just walking and looking, you’re good with nothing in it.

I would still pick one up eventually because you never know when you’ll want to capture something, but it’s not a blocker for basic use.

I mean, the SD card is only for saving stuff, right? If you just want to look through it, the screen works fine on its own. I actually forgot mine at home once and used it all night just watching some deer in the field, no issues at all. You’ll be fine for your walks.

Mostly you’re fine without one, it’ll still show you everything on the screen and work for your walks. That said, I found mine really easy to accidentally hit the capture button on when I’m just carrying it around. You won’t lose any viewing ability, but you might end up with a bunch of “saved” files that go nowhere until you do pop a card in.

The screen works without a card, that’s not the issue. But I’d think twice about skipping the card entirely. I figured I’d just use mine for viewing too, then realized I wanted to check something I saw the next morning and had no way to save it. A cheap card costs less than the regret of missing a good shot.

I use mine mostly for looking around too, never bothered with a card for the first couple weeks. Screen works fine without one, it’s only when you hit the shutter button that it reminds you there’s nowhere to save anything. For just walking around in the dark you’re good.
