Does SynGas mess with the car's warranty at all?

So I’ve been looking at SynGas for a bit and it seems like a simple enough thing to plug in. But I keep wondering, since it’s not really a factory part, could it cause any issues if something else goes wrong with the car? Like, would the dealer get weird about it? Just curious if anyone thought about that before getting one.

Depends on the dealer honestly. Some are cool about anything, some will blame the OBD2 port for a dead battery if you look at it wrong. It’s not like a tune that leaves obvious traces, but I wouldn’t expect them to be helpful about it if something electrical acts up.

Had mine for about three months now and nothing weird happened at the dealer when I took it in for an oil change. They never even mentioned it sitting there. I think as long as you’re not messing with the actual engine or wiring, most shops just don’t care about an OBD2 dongle. Warranty stuff usually only gets sticky if they can prove the part caused the problem.

Warranty stuff is always a gamble no matter what you plug in. I figure as long as it’s not permanently changing anything under the hood, it’s pretty low risk. If the dealer asks, it takes two seconds to unplug it before you roll in.

My buddy had a similar device on his truck and when he brought it in for warranty work the dealer literally didn’t care at all. They were more focused on the actual issue than scanning the OBD port for extra stuff. I feel like unless you’re trying to claim something that’s directly related to the device messing up, you’re probably fine.

Warranty paranoia gets old. If the dealer wants to deny a claim they’ll find a reason regardless of what you plug in. SynGas isn’t bolting on a turbo or cutting wires, it’s just sitting there reading data. Unless it somehow proves it caused the actual failure, they don’t have a leg to stand on.

I get why you’re asking, but honestly I think the warranty question is more about the dealership than the device itself. I plugged mine in and forgot about it until my check engine light came on for a separate issue. The service guy saw it sitting there, asked what it was, I told him, and he just shrugged. Didn’t even mention it in the paperwork. My only real thought is if you’re worried, just unplug it before you bring it in. Takes two seconds.

I had the same thought before I got mine, but I actually asked my service advisor about it when I was in for something unrelated. He said as long as it’s just an OBD2 plug-in and not messing with the wiring, they really don’t care. It’s the stuff that requires cutting or splicing that gets flagged.

I think at the end of the day it really depends on the dealer and what the actual issue is. If they have to replace a whole engine, sure, they might look for any excuse, but I doubt they’re going to blame a little plug-in for a blown speaker or something random like that. The thing just sits in the port, it’s not like you’re cutting wires.

I never even thought about the warranty angle before I got mine. I just figured if it doesn’t physically change anything on the car, what’s the big deal.

The Magnuson-Moss thing is worth a quick read if you’re worried, basically the dealer has to prove the part caused the damage.

I think it’s one of those things where you just have to decide if the peace of mind is worth it. I’ve had mine plugged in for a few months and it’s been totally fine, but I also go to a smaller local shop instead of the dealership, so maybe that makes a difference for me.

The warranty question is fair, but I think it really comes down to how invasive the part is. Since SynGas just sits in the OBD2 port and doesn’t actually change any wiring or hardware, I can’t see a dealer trying to pin an engine problem on it. They’d have a hard time proving a little plug caused that kind of damage.

Honestly, I would not worry about it. I have had mine plugged in for about six months now because I just leave it there. I had to take my car in for a new A/C compressor, and they did not say a single word about the thing sitting in the port. They just scanned it and did their thing.
