Noah KentMemberI keep going back and forth on the Qinux BlackOptic for night hikes. My main doubt is how the video recording actually looks in complete darkness with the IR on. I know it works, but is the footage clear enough to actually identify stuff, or is it more like grainy blobs moving around?

MemberI haven’t tested mine in total pitch black, but in pretty dark woods it was fine for seeing shapes and movement. Definitely not crystal clear like daytime footage, but I could tell what I was looking at within maybe 20-30 feet. Grainy blobs might be a bit harsh, but don’t expect HD movie quality either.

MemberHonestly I wouldn’t expect it to look like a movie or anything, but I’ve watched a couple clips people posted and you can definitely tell what you’re looking at. Not grainy blobs unless you’re trying to zoom way in on something far away.

MemberI think the “grainy blobs” worry is a bit overblown. I’ve used mine in a pitch black room just to test it, and while it’s not high-def, you can clearly make out objects and movement. It’s definitely usable.

MemberI don’t really buy the grainy blobs thing. I took mine out a few nights ago and could make out details fine. Not daytime quality obviously but it’s not useless either.

Chris MillerMemberI haven’t used mine in total darkness yet, but from what I’ve seen in dim conditions, the footage is decent enough for basic identification. I think people expect too much from something at this price point, it’s not gonna look super crisp but it does the job for hiking and stuff.

Tom BriggsMemberI think people overthink this stuff. I just use mine when I’m out at night and it shows me what I need to see. Not gonna win any awards but it works.

MemberI just took mine out last weekend in a completely dark field and the footage was way better than I expected. You can clearly see animals moving and what they are, not just blobs. It’s not cinema quality but for what it is, it does the job fine for identifying stuff.

MemberHonestly I wouldn’t overthink it. It’s not going to look like a pro camera but it does the job for night hikes.

MemberI’ve had mine for a few weeks now and I’ve taken it out on a couple of really dark trails. The video is definitely clear enough to tell what’s an animal vs. a bush or a person, not like some grainy mess. It’s not going to blow you away with detail, but I’ve been happy enough with what I can see in the footage.

MemberNot really sure what people expect from a device in this price range in total darkness. It’s not like you’re gonna get broadcast quality footage.

Lisa HallMemberI’d just assume it’s gonna look grainy. That’s how cheap IR stuff always looks.

Noah KentMemberAppreciate all the input, that actually helps a lot. Sounds like it’s decent enough for what I need, even if it’s not perfect. I’ll probably just grab one and see how it goes.
