Rob CMemberI know it has a kill switch but does it actually shut off if knocked over? My old one didn’t and that always bugged me. Just wondering if the WellHeater does. Don’t want to test it myself.

MemberThe kill switch is the tip over shutoff. It cuts power when the unit tilts, so knocking it over should shut it off. Mine does it every time the dog bumps it.

EthanFreeMemberMine only cuts out if it actually tips past a certain point, not just from a light bump. Knocked it with my foot a few times and it kept running. So it’s not as instant as I expected.

MemberPretty sure it does, mine cuts out when tipped.

MemberMine just kept running when it tipped.

MemberI’ve had mine for about four months and it has shut off on me twice when my dog’s tail caught the cord and yanked it off the side table. Both times it cut out right away, no drama. But I will say it seems to depend on how far it goes over. The one time it just slid and tilted a little, nothing happened. It was only when it actually went down that the shutoff kicked in. So if your main worry is a full knockover, that part seems to work. If you’re thinking about it getting bumped around a bit without actually falling, that’s a different story. I never went out of my way to test it either, both times were accidents.

MemberThe kill switch and tip over shutoff are the same thing on these. It’s just a little switch inside that cuts power once the unit tilts far enough. So if you knock it over, it should go off. The catch is how far it has to tilt before that happens. Mine has gone off a couple times when it actually fell flat, but I’ve also bumped it and had it lean without shutting down. So it works but it’s not instant the second it moves. If your old one never shut off at all, this is at least a step up from that. I get not wanting to test it though, tipping a hot heater on purpose feels wrong. I’d just plug it in, turn it on, and gently tilt it to the side until you hear the click. That’s what I did before trusting it.

MemberI wouldn’t count on it doing much for a light knock. Mine only cuts when it’s fully on its side, so a bump across the floor won’t stop it. Feels more like a backup than a real safety feature.

MemberMine does shut off when it goes over, but it has to actually tip. Sliding it around or bumping it won’t do anything.

MemberI wouldn’t trust that switch to save you honestly. Mine tipped over onto a rug and just kept humming away like nothing happened, so I ended up returning it.

Rachel ColeMemberMine cuts out but only after it’s actually on its side, not from a bump. So yeah it works, just not as fast as you’d expect.

Emma JarrisMemberI’ve never had mine fail to cut out when it goes over, so I don’t really get the worry about it not working. Yeah it has to actually tip, but that’s kind of the whole point of a tip over switch. Mine’s been bumped plenty and only shut off the times it actually went down.

MemberMine has cut out every time it’s gone over, so I’ve got no complaints there. It’s one of the few things on this heater I actually trust.

Lisa HallMemberI had the same concern with mine because I used to have an old space heater that would just keep running no matter what. With the WellHeater, I’ve knocked it over twice now and both times it cut out right away. First time was when my dog’s tail caught the cord and yanked it off the table. It shut off before I even got to it. Second time I bumped it with my foot while walking past and it tipped onto the carpet and stopped immediately. The kill switch is on the bottom so once it’s not sitting flat it kills the power. I don’t think you need to worry about testing it yourself. If it’s anything like mine it’ll do what it’s supposed to. The only thing I’d say is make sure it’s on a flat surface so it doesn’t tip in the first place.

MemberThat shutoff is actually one of the few things I’d give it credit for. When I accidentally caught the cord with my foot and the thing went down, it stopped pretty much right away. For a little plug-in heater that lives on the floor, that’s a nice thing to know before you buy one.

MemberMine has always cut out when it tips, but I only know that because I knocked it over twice in the same week. No idea what the trigger actually is, it just goes quiet. That’s enough for me.

MemberMine didn’t shut off the one time it mattered. It fell against a laundry basket and stayed on until I picked it up. Maybe it was stuck at an angle, but it wasn’t upright and it was still running.

MemberThe kill switch and tip over shutoff aren’t always the same thing on these. I’ve seen heaters where the kill switch only kicks in if the unit goes completely horizontal, so if it tips onto something soft or lands at an angle it might keep running. Not saying that’s what’s happening with the WellHeater specifically, but that could explain why some people have it cut out every time and others don’t. The angle it lands at probably matters more than people realize.

Tom CallMemberIf it were me, I’d just tip it over once while it’s on and see what happens. Mine cuts out when it goes down, but I’ve never trusted those switches 100 percent. Better to find out on your own terms than during an actual accident.
9 de October de 2026 at 06:30 #14998Eddie___K
MemberI wouldn’t assume the kill switch means it handles every tip over. On a lot of these little heaters the tip function only works at a certain angle, so a slow slide onto a rug might not trip it the same way a full knockover would. That seems to be what some people in here ran into. Mine hasn’t given me a reason to doubt it yet, but I also haven’t watched it go down in slow motion. If it’s a dealbreaker for you, that’s fair. I just wouldn’t buy one expecting it to be foolproof. Cheap safety switches are cheap for a reason.

MemberMine definitely does not shut off every time it tips. I’ve found it upright still running after catching the cord, so I don’t really buy that it’s a guaranteed thing. The kill switch is more about the base losing contact than the heater actually falling over.
9 de October de 2026 at 07:43 #15008
Rob CMemberFigures. Sounds like it depends on the unit and I’m not about to play crash test dummy with mine. I’ll just keep it on a flat surface and call it good.
