MemberI’ve been using the Enence Translator for a few trips and it’s been fine for basic stuff. But I’m not sure how well it really works offline. Sometimes it seems to translate okay, other times it just doesn’t. Anyone else notice that? Maybe it’s just me expecting too much.

MemberI mostly use it for Spanish and Italian, and offline has been hit or miss for me too. If I speak short and slow it usually gets it, but anything longer and it just gives up. I’d rather have a device that only does a few languages offline reliably than one that claims 68 and fumbles half of them.

MemberOffline feels like a bonus mode, not the main event. I’d treat it as a backup for simple phrases and keep expectations low. If most of your use is quick travel stuff, it’s probably fine.

Dani MoonMemberI took mine on a two week trip through Portugal and France earlier this year and stopped using the offline mode after about four days. It worked for basic stuff like asking where the bathroom was or ordering coffee, but anything past that fell apart. I remember trying to ask a train station employee about a schedule change and it gave me some garbled response that made no sense. The guy just looked at me confused.
What annoyed me was that it was inconsistent. Same type of sentence, one time it works, next time it doesn’t. I couldn’t figure out if it was background noise, how fast I was talking, or just the device being flaky. I tried speaking slower and it helped sometimes but not always. After a while I just started using my phone with a downloaded language pack instead and that was more reliable.
I think the problem is people expect offline to work the same as online. It doesn’t. The languages are limited and the accuracy drops off a cliff. For me it became more of a hassle than just pulling out my phone, which kind of defeats the point of carrying a separate device. If offline is the main reason you bought it, that’s a problem. If it’s just a backup for when you have no signal, then fine, but don’t count on it for anything important.

MemberI don’t really bother with offline mode unless I’m somewhere with zero signal, and even then I keep sentences super basic. Online is where I get the most out of it. I’d rather just wait until I have wifi than fight with it.

MemberOffline worked fine for me in Japan last month.

MemberOffline mode on mine only handled single words and very short phrases. Anything longer and it either froze or gave nonsense. Fine as an absolute last resort, but I wouldn’t count on it for actual conversations.

MemberMine only really handled preset phrases offline, anything I tried to say on my own came out scrambled. It’s fine if you just need directions or a menu, but not much beyond that. I still keep it around for that.

Laura ReadsMemberI used it offline on a cruise last spring and it handled French and Spanish fine for things like asking where the bathroom was or ordering coffee. It definitely struggled with longer stuff though, so I kept it to quick phrases. Still handy when there’s no wifi.

MemberOffline mode is basically a bonus feature, not the main event. I use it for quick stuff like greetings or asking for a table, and that works. Anything more complicated and I just wait until I have signal again.

MemberI’d just stick to online and save yourself the hassle.

MemberMine does fine with short stuff but the longer sentences get weird. I mostly just use it for asking simple questions when there’s no wifi. It’s not something I’d rely on for a real conversation though.

MemberMine was weirdly okay with German offline, way better than I expected. Then I tried it in Italy and half the stuff came out backwards. So yeah, it’s hit or miss depending on the language.

MemberOffline mode is a joke outside a few phrases.

MemberFor basic travel phrases it does the job, but don’t expect it to handle a real conversation offline. I mostly use it for quick stuff and it’s been fine. Online is where it actually shines.

d4nielParticipantOffline is hit or miss for me too. Works fine for single words or short questions but anything longer and it just gives up. I still keep it around since it’s better than nothing when there’s no signal.

MemberI used it offline in Japan for a week and it was actually fine for basic stuff. Not sure why some people have issues, maybe it depends on the language. Mine handled short phrases without a problem.

Rachel ColeMemberI’d stop relying on it for anything that matters. That’s what I do now. I bring a small phrasebook for the handful of things I actually need and treat the device as a backup, not the plan. The offline mode is clearly a stripped down version of the real thing, and the languages it covers well are limited. If a translation comes out fine, great, but I’m not standing in a pharmacy hoping it pulls through. The pattern I noticed is that it handles the stuff it was probably trained on heavily and falls apart on anything with slang or regional phrasing. Whether that ever gets fixed is anyone’s guess, but I’m not holding my breath waiting on a firmware update to save a trip.

MemberI think offline is actually more reliable than people give it credit for, but only if you stick to one language pair and don’t switch around. I used mine with Spanish for about two weeks straight on a trip and it handled most of what I threw at it, short sentences, directions, ordering food. Then I tried adding French into the mix and it fell apart completely. My guess is the offline setup is really built around whatever you downloaded, so it kind of locks into one pair. The weird part is it never told me that. I just figured it out after a few frustrating attempts. So when it “doesn’t work” for me, it’s usually because I’m asking it to do something it was never set up for offline. That’s probably why results vary so much between people.

MemberOffline only handled one language pair for me before it crapped out.
4 de October de 2026 at 05:25 #14219Leo Grey
MemberI got decent results offline as long as I kept sentences short and simple. Anything with slang or names fell apart, but that’s expected for a device this size. My main gripe is it quietly switches modes and you don’t always notice until it garbles something.
