Thinking about getting one of these for my dog who barks at everything in the yard. Is the Qinux BarkBuz actually okay to leave outside or does the splash resistance not cover rain? I don’t want to babysit it every time the weather turns. Just need to know if it survives being outdoors.

I’d leave it out, mine handled rain fine.

Mine lives on the back porch year round and the only thing I do is bring it in when it’s charging. The splash rating covers drizzle and soggy mornings, but I wouldn’t leave it sitting in a puddle. Two winters in and it’s still going, so it’s not as fragile as it looks.

I keep mine mounted under the eaves on the patio, so it only gets the odd sideways rain, and it has been fine for a few months. If it were fully exposed to downpours I would probably just bring it in. Splash resistant is not the same as sitting in a puddle.

Splash resistant and weatherproof are not the same thing. I’ve had gadgets rated like this that survived a light sprinkle and died after one proper storm, so I wouldn’t treat “splash resistant” as “leave it out in the rain forever.”

Mine is currently sitting on a covered part of the deck where it mostly stays dry, and I still bring it in when the forecast looks rough. Maybe that’s overkill, but the thing has a charging port and electronics inside, so water getting in there is game over.

If you really want to leave it fully exposed, I’d at least check the port seal and where the seams are. Cheap housings tend to leak right at the seams after a few months of temperature swings. So it can probably handle being outdoors, just not being rained on directly day after day.

Mine stays on a covered deck and it’s been fine.

I wouldn’t count on it surviving real weather. Splash resistant usually means a bit of moisture, not sitting through a downpour or a storm. If I had one I’d still bring it in when it looks rough out.

Mine got soaked in a surprise storm last month and it’s still working, so I don’t think you have to babysit it constantly. That said, splash resistant doesn’t mean it loves sitting in a puddle, so I’d still keep it somewhere with a bit of cover.

I’m still in the “thinking about it” stage with these, so I can’t tell you from experience how it handles months of bad weather, but the splash-resistant wording is the part that gives me pause. When a product says splash-resistant, I usually read that as “fine if a few drops hit it” rather than “fine to live outside uncovered.” So if your plan is to mount it somewhere totally open and forget about it, I’d be a little cautious.

That said, I don’t think that automatically means you have to treat it like a fragile indoor gadget. A lot probably depends on where it actually sits. Something like a fence post with zero cover is going to take way more abuse than a spot near a wall, under a roof overhang, or anywhere it isn’t directly catching every storm. If the yard is your only option, I’d at least think about whether there’s a spot that gets some natural shelter without blocking the range too much.

For me the bigger question would be battery charging, because even if it survives the weather, you still have to bring it in or reach it regularly. If it’s mounted somewhere annoying, that gets old fast. So I’d probably look at where it needs to go for the dog, then figure out if that spot is realistic for something that isn’t fully weatherproof. If it has to sit in the wide open, I’d personally keep comparing other options.

I’d rather keep it where I can grab it if the weather gets ugly. Mine lives on a shelf in the garage and I just carry it out when the dog’s being a pain, which honestly suits me better than mounting something permanent anyway.

Mine’s been hanging on the fence post through two months of Texas heat and a few good soakings. The little mounting tab is what I’d keep an eye on, not the water. It’s held up way better than I figured for the price.

I left mine out for about three weeks straight, rain included, and it kept working. The rubber flap over the charging port is what actually keeps water out, so just make sure that’s pressed in properly. Once it gets loose I’d bring it in.

Splash resistant is a meaningless term to me. Every cheap gadget says that and then dies the first time it actually rains hard. Unless the listing says waterproof with a rating, I’d assume it’s not built for weather.

Mine actually died after a rainy week outside, so I wouldn’t count on it living out there permanently. Worked great before that though.

Mine sat on the porch through a couple of storms and came through fine, but I still bring it in when I know heavy rain is coming. Splash resistant just tells me it can handle a bit of weather, not live out there full time. For the price I get why people try it, but I’d rather not gamble on it.

Splash resistant won’t survive real rain.

Mine stayed out on the deck all last summer and fall, no issues. I did notice the little indicator light gets dim in direct sun, but that’s about it. Still charged fine after months of sitting out there.

Mine quit after one storm, so no.

Mine lives on a hook under the eaves, so it never takes rain straight on. Splash resistance isn’t the same as sitting in a downpour though. I’d still bring it in for storms.

Guess I’ll just keep an eye on the weather then.
