Rob CMemberI’m thinking about getting a SynGas but I already use a scan tool occasionally. Does it block the port or cause issues if I need to plug something else in? I don’t want to keep swapping it out. Just wondering if it’s a hassle or if it’s fine to leave in all the time.

Ben KerrMemberMine stays plugged in and my scanner still works fine when I plug it in. The port is still there, just occupied. So you’d have to unplug the SynGas to use your scan tool, unless you get a splitter. Not really a hassle for occasional use.

Mar__kusMemberI ran into a different problem with mine. Left it in for about four months and it kept the port busy, but the bigger thing was my scanner wouldn’t even talk to the car unless I pulled the SynGas first. Not a physical blocking thing, more like it was hogging the line. So every time I wanted to check a code I had to unplug it, scan, plug it back in and let it relearn. That got old fast. Not saying it happens on every car, but on mine it wasn’t just a matter of both playing nice. If you only scan once in a blue moon it’s whatever, but if you’re plugging in regularly I’d expect some back and forth. That’s the part nobody mentions when they say the port is still there.

MemberIt takes up the port, so yeah you can’t have both plugged in at once. I just leave mine in and unplug it on the rare occasion I need to scan something. Not a big deal but it’s not like you can run both at the same time.

MemberIf you use the scan tool often, that port sharing would bug me more than anything. I ended up moving mine to a different car that I don’t scan as much, and that solved it for me.

MemberI actually don’t leave mine in all the time. Pulled it after a few weeks because I got tired of the port being taken up, and honestly didn’t notice enough of a difference to justify it. If you use your scan tool even occasionally, that alone would probably bug me.

MemberJust unplug it when you scan.

MemberMine’s been in since spring and I still plug my scanner in whenever a light pops up. No conflict at all. The port’s occupied but it doesn’t lock anything out.

LauTopMemberI had mine in for maybe two months and used my scanner twice during that stretch. No errors, no weird behavior, just had to unplug the SynGas first. It’s a small annoyance but nothing more than that.

MemberThe port is physically occupied so nothing else can go in while it’s there. That’s just how it is. If you need your scanner, it comes out first. Whether that’s a hassle depends on how often you actually scan.

MemberMine’s been plugged in since last fall and I’ve hooked my scanner up twice without pulling it. Never had a problem. Maybe some cars are fussy but mine isn’t.

MemberYou do have to pick one or the other since it sits in the port. I just leave mine in and plug the scanner in when I actually need it, which isn’t often. Takes two seconds to swap, so not really a hassle for me.

MemberMy experience is probably not what you want to hear, but I’ll give it anyway. I tried one of these OBD2 gadgets a while back, different brand but same idea, and the port situation was the least of my problems. It sat there fine, never interfered with anything electrical, but I also never saw the fuel savings they claimed. Ran it for about four months, tracked my fill-ups the old fashioned way with a notebook, and the numbers stayed basically flat. Your scanner will work fine once you pull the device, that part is simple. My issue is whether the thing actually does anything worth occupying that port. If you’re already getting decent mileage, I’d be skeptical it changes much. Not saying don’t try it, just don’t expect the port to be the dealbreaker. The real question is whether the device justifies the space it takes up.

MemberWouldn’t leave it in all the time personally. I pulled mine after a few weeks because it just felt like one more thing hanging off the port, and honestly I didn’t notice enough of a difference to make it worth the hassle. Not saying it caused any issue, just wasn’t for me.

MemberIf you actually need the port regularly, the SynGas is just going to be in the way. That part is real. But for me it’s not a hassle because I only plug my scanner in a few times a year anyway. Leaving it in is the whole point of these things.
