Looking at the Herz P1 Smart Ring and I see it says no subscription required. But I’ve been burned before by “free” apps that lock basic stuff behind a paywall after a month. Can anyone confirm if the app actually stays free for all the tracking features, or do they eventually start nagging you to pay? Not interested in another monthly fee.

The app doesn’t charge you, but I still wouldn’t call it fully free. Mine kept the basic tracking going fine, though they push their other ring models in the app now and then.

I’ve had mine for about four months and nothing has been locked behind a paywall so far. All the sleep, heart rate, and activity stuff still works the same as day one. There are occasional popups suggesting I check out their other products or upgrade to a different model, but I just close them and move on. No nagging to subscribe, no countdown timer, nothing like that.

That said, I don’t really blame you for being cautious. I’ve had a fitness band before where everything was fine for a month and then suddenly sleep stages required a premium plan. That left a bad taste. With the Herz P1 though, it seems like the app is just part of what you buy. I mainly care about the basics and those have stayed accessible.

If the subscription thing is your main worry, I’d say it’s probably fine based on what I’ve seen. Can’t promise they won’t change it down the road, but for now it’s genuinely free.

I don’t buy the subscription panic on this one. My brother has the P1 and he’s been using it since spring. He’s the type who checks his app daily and he hasn’t paid a cent beyond the ring itself. What I noticed though is that they do nag you with emails about accessories and other products, which is annoying but not the same as locking features. The tracking stuff he uses, sleep and heart rate mainly, stayed open. So I’d say the free part is real, the constant promos are the trade off. Not a dealbreaker for me personally but I get why people get suspicious after being burned.

I’d be a little careful because “no subscription” sometimes just means it’s free at launch. I haven’t used the P1 myself, but I’d probably look for recent reviews or ask in a group where people have had it longer than a few months. If the app is genuinely free, great, but I get why you’re checking first.

I picked one up before a work trip in July and have been wearing it pretty much nonstop since. The app hasn’t asked me for a cent. Everything I actually look at is still there, sleep, heart rate, the stress thing, all of it. I travel a lot so I mostly check it in hotel rooms at night, and it syncs fine whenever I open the app.

The only thing I’ve noticed is they’ll show you other rings they sell in the app sometimes, but it’s not a popup in your face or anything, just sort of sitting there if you scroll. No countdown, no “your trial ends soon” nonsense. I’ve had cheap trackers before that basically bricked themselves after a month, so I was watching for it. Nothing so far.

I can’t promise they won’t change it down the road, but as of now it’s just free and that’s been my experience.

    No subscription on mine either.

No subscription on mine either, so that part of the listing seems accurate. I don’t know if they’d change it down the road, but nothing in the app has tried to charge me so far.

I’m more curious whether people here actually wear it long enough to care. My wife has a similar ring from another brand and the app is free but it’s pretty bare, so “no subscription” doesn’t always mean you get much. Haven’t tried the P1 myself though.

The “no subscription” claim is easy to make at launch. What matters is whether it survives the first year or two once they’ve got enough people locked into the hardware. I haven’t seen the P1 specifically, but I’ve watched plenty of these apps start free and then quietly move sleep scores or trends behind a paywall later. If the listing doesn’t spell out what stays free long term, I’d treat that as the real question, not whether it’s free today.

No subscription talk in the app so far, but I’ve only had it a few weeks. What I’d check is whether returns are easy if they flip that later. That’s the part that actually costs you.

I really doubt they’d risk it with how many cheap rings are out now.

The ring itself is fine, but I’ll push back on the idea that the app is the main risk. My issue with these cheap rings is the hardware dying before any paywall matters. I’ve gone through two no-name rings in the past year and both crapped out in under four months. Sensors just stopped reading. App was still free, doesn’t help much when the thing won’t sync.

So yeah, no subscription so far on the Herz, seems legit. But I’d think about how long you actually expect to use it. If you’re the type who swaps gadgets every year anyway, the subscription question is kind of moot. If you want something to last three years, that’s a different bet and the app policy is only one part of it.

I’ve had mine about four months and the app hasn’t asked me for a cent. I keep waiting for the catch but so far it’s just been free tracking, which kind of surprises me.

The thing I’d check is whether the app works without making an account. Some of these free ones still want your email and then you’re getting promo mail every other week, which is its own kind of annoying.

Mine’s been going since last fall and the only “pay” prompt I ever got was for some premium sleep coaching thing, which I ignored and it never came back. All the normal tracking stuff stayed open. My wife uses the cycle tracking on hers and hasn’t hit a wall either. So far so good on my end.

The one thing I’d actually look at is where the app is coming from. I’ve got a cheap tracker from a brand that basically vanished, and now the app is a ghost town, no updates, and it won’t even sync right on my newer phone. So the “no subscription” thing was technically true, it just stopped being useful for other reasons.

With the Herz P1 I’d poke around and see if the company seems like it’ll stick around for a couple years, because a free app that nobody maintains is basically the same headache as a paywall, just slower. Mine came with a companion app that was free and stayed free, but I still can’t use half the features now.

So yeah, the subscription question matters, but I’d also check if the brand has any kind of track record before assuming free means free forever.

I’d want to see it in writing, not just a bullet point on the product page. No subscription today doesn’t mean no subscription after a firmware update six months from now.

No subscription on mine so far, but I’ve only had it a few weeks. The app does push a premium sleep thing every now and then, easy to dismiss though. Ask me again in six months.
