I’m considering the Pro Capture for hiking and cycling, but I’m worried about the screen being useless outdoors. Does it actually stay visible in direct sun, or is it just a blur? I don’t want to rely on my phone every time. Any input from people who’ve used it would be helpful.

I haven’t used this specific one, but I’ve tried a couple of action cams with built-in screens and the sun situation is usually pretty rough. Unless the screen is really bright, direct sunlight basically turns it into a mirror. I can usually make out the general framing but not much detail. For hiking that’s probably fine, but if you’re trying to check settings or review a clip, forget it. The phone app tends to be more reliable in bright conditions anyway, even if it’s a bit annoying to pull out. If not having a usable screen outdoors is a dealbreaker for you, I’d try to see one in person before buying.

Mine has surprised me actually. I did a long ride last month with the camera mounted on the bars and the screen was still readable at noon. Not like a phone in full brightness, but I could frame shots and check settings without guessing. The matte finish on the screen helps a lot compared to the glossy ones I’ve had before. I mostly shoot with the sun behind me though, so maybe that’s part of it. For hiking it’s been fine too, I just tilt it a bit when I need to see. I still use the app sometimes for remote stuff but I don’t feel forced into it. If you’re mostly shooting into the sun it’ll be tougher, but for normal riding and walking around it does the job.

I’d disagree on the phone being a must. On a hike I just bump the screen brightness and angle it down a bit and it’s fine for framing shots. It’s not going to look like a phone in full sun, but it’s not a total blur either.

I actually think the phone thing is overblown. Half the time I just set it recording and forget it, I’m not staring at a screen while I’m out moving anyway. Framing is a quick glance at most, and that’s fine even when it’s washed out.

Direct sun washes mine out pretty badly.

I’ve had mine for about four months now and the screen is honestly the weakest part of the whole thing when you’re outside. Not useless, but you have to work for it. I found that tilting it slightly away from the sun helps more than cranking brightness, which just drains the battery faster anyway. What bugs me more is the glare off the screen itself, it turns into a mirror at certain angles and I end up seeing my own face instead of what I’m filming. I mostly shoot early morning or evening now so it’s a non issue, but midday rides are a gamble. I still frame stuff by eye and check the footage later. Not ideal but it’s what I signed up for with a cheap action cam.

I’ve taken mine out a few times and the screen is honestly more usable than I expected, even in direct sun. The brightness holds up better than I thought it would. It’s not like staring at a phone screen outside.

Mine stays readable in direct sun if I keep the screen angled away from the glare, and on a hike last week I had no problem framing shots. Once the sun hits it straight on it does get washed out though. It’s not a blur, just not great at certain angles.

I mostly shoot with mine mounted on my handlebars and I gave up trying to frame anything on the screen. I just point it in the general direction and fix it later, works fine for what I need.

I brought mine on two trips this summer and ended up just using the phone app instead. The screen was basically a gray rectangle once the sun hit it, even tilting it didn’t help much for me. Not saying it’s useless, but I stopped counting on it.

I don’t even bother checking the screen much when I’m out in the sun. I just set it to record and fix the framing later, works fine for me.

I don’t have the Pro Capture, but I’ve used a couple action cams on bike rides and the screens all kind of wash out in harsh sun. If framing matters to you, I’d plan on tilting it or finding shade before you hit record.

I took mine kayaking last month and gave up on the screen after like ten minutes. Between the water glare and the sun it was just a shiny little mirror to me.

I’ve had mine since spring and the screen has been fine for me even in full sun. I just bump the brightness up and I can still see enough to check framing. Not saying it’s like a phone screen, but it works well enough for hiking.

I’m not sure the built-in screen is worth counting on outdoors. I’ve seen enough footage previews go dark on bright days that I’d assume it’s mostly for quick checks in shade. The phone app being an option doesn’t mean the screen is useless, but I wouldn’t buy it expecting a clear view at noon.

Mine looked fine last weekend in full sun.

I think the screen thing gets blown out of proportion. I’ve used mine on a few hikes now and the display has been totally readable with brightness turned up, even around midday. Direct sun isn’t the killer people make it out to be.
