MemberI’m thinking about getting the Herz P1 Smart Ring but I’ve never used a smart ring before. Does it matter which finger you wear it on, or can you just pick any? Also, do you have to switch hands for it to work properly? Just wondering before I decide.

Ben KerrMemberProbably any finger works as long as the fit is snug, but the fit matters more than which one. I wear mine on the index finger just because it sits best there. Haven’t needed to switch hands.

coffeeandscreensParticipantI actually had to move mine to my non-dominant hand because the readings were kinda off on my dominant one, guess all the typing and moving messes with it. Finger-wise I started on my ring finger but it was too loose, so now it lives on my middle finger and that’s been way more consistent. So yeah, hand and finger can matter more than people admit.

pixelnomadParticipantI think finger choice matters less than people make it sound, but there’s a catch. I’ve tried a few smart rings and the sensor needs decent contact with the skin, so a finger that’s too thin or where the ring spins around will give you garbage data. For me the middle finger has always been the sweet spot because it tends to be a bit thicker than the ring finger and the fit stays put.
As for switching hands, I wouldn’t bother unless the app specifically tells you to. I’ve seen people treat it like some calibration ritual but in my experience you just pick a finger, size it right, and leave it there. Consistency seems to help more than anything since the sleep and recovery stuff is looking at trends over time anyway. If you’re moving it around every day you’re just adding noise.

Susan KennetMemberI’ve had mine on my middle finger for a couple months now and it’s been fine. Honestly I just picked that one because it was the best fit in the sizing kit. Never bothered switching hands.

MemberAnyone treating finger placement like it’s some big decision is wasting time. I got the sizing kit, wore the ring on whatever finger fit, and the numbers looked the same as far as I could tell. If the thing slides around you’ll get garbage data, that’s about it.

MemberI went into it thinking finger placement was mostly a gimmick, something the app tells you so it feels like there’s more to it. After a few months the only thing that actually mattered to me was whether the ring stayed put. I started on my ring finger because that was the best fit from the sizing kit, no other reason. Readings were steady enough for what I use it for.
What changed my mind was when I tried moving it to another hand for a day just to see. Sleep data looked roughly the same, heart rate during the day had a few gaps but nothing dramatic. So I stopped caring about the whole finger debate. The ring doesn’t know or care what finger it’s on, it just wants skin contact that doesn’t slip.
One thing I’ll say is that a finger that’s too loose is worse than picking the “wrong” finger. If it spins or slides around at night, that’s when you get weird numbers. I’d sort the fit first and then stop thinking about it. Anyone obsessing over index vs middle is skipping the part that actually affects the data.

MemberPinky finger felt way more accurate for me than the usual fingers.

MemberI’d figure out which finger actually fits first and not get cute about it. That’s the whole answer.
People act like there’s some secret finger that unlocks better data. There isn’t. What matters is the ring not sliding around and the inside of it sitting flat against your skin. If it spins or you can peel it off without resistance, the numbers get sloppy. That part is real. But it has nothing to do with index versus middle versus whatever.
What I’d actually do is get the sizing kit, wear the sample on a couple different fingers for a full day each, and pay attention to which one stays put when you’re sleeping. Most people never think about that part. You roll over, your hand swells a little, and a ring that felt fine at noon is either strangling you at 3am or rotated halfway around. That’s the deciding factor, not some chart.
Same with hands. Whichever one you use less for gripping and typing is going to give you cleaner readings, but that’s not a rule you have to follow, it’s just physics. If your dominant hand is the only one that fits comfortably, use it and move on.
Nobody’s going to look at your data and go “ah, wrong finger.” The ring doesn’t know or care. Pick the one that’s comfortable and stays in place overnight, then stop thinking about it.

EliMemberI only wear mine on my right hand because my left knuckles are a bit wider and it kept sliding. Index finger fits me best, middle is fine too. I don’t really think the hand matters much as long as it doesn’t move around.

MemberI wore mine on my ring finger for a while, then switched to my index finger just because it fit better, and honestly the readings looked about the same to me. The app does let you set which finger and hand you’re using, so it’s not like you’re locked into one spot. I’d just go with whatever finger feels comfortable enough to forget about.

Nina_gadgetMemberI’d just get the sizing kit and go with whichever finger feels right for you instead of trying to pick the “correct” one in advance. That’s what I did when I was looking at it, and it took a lot of the second-guessing out of the whole thing.
For me the deciding factor was comfort overnight, not accuracy charts or anything like that. I sleep with my hands kind of tucked under my pillow, and certain fingers just felt annoying after a couple hours. My index finger ended up being the one I could basically forget about, so that’s where I’d wear it. If I were you I’d wear the sizer for a full day and a night before committing, because the finger that feels fine while you’re just sitting around isn’t always the one that’s still fine at 3am.
Switching hands is something I’d only do if the fit on my usual hand stopped working, like if my fingers changed size or the ring started spinning around. Otherwise I’d pick one spot and stay there just so I’m not comparing readings from two different fingers and confusing myself. I don’t think there’s a magic finger that gives you better numbers, it’s more about consistent contact.
I’m still deciding whether to actually buy the P1 myself, mostly because I keep going back and forth on whether I’d really wear a ring every day. But the finger question stopped being a worry once I tried the sizer.

MemberI’ve actually had better luck wearing mine on the same finger every day rather than moving it around. Switching hands messed with my sleep data a bit because it kept thinking I was starting over. So I just picked the one that stays put and stopped fiddling with it.

MemberIndex finger, but only because it fits best.

MemberThanks for all the replies, sounds like there’s no secret finger after all. I’ll just grab the sizing kit and see what fits, probably overthinking it.
