I’m thinking about getting a SawShark but I’m not sure if it’ll fit my chainsaw chain. I’ve seen it mentioned as compatible with “many” chains, but that’s a bit vague. Anyone know if it handles most standard sizes or if I need to check something specific before buying?
I had the same worry before grabbing one. I mostly run a Stihl chain on a pretty standard 18″ bar, and it fit fine. I’ve also used it on a smaller electric chainsaw with a different pitch, and that worked too. I think the main thing to look at is the actual tooth size and the gauge of the chain, not so much the brand. If you have something really odd or a super low-profile chain, that’s probably where you’d run into trouble. I checked the specs against my chains before buying just to be safe. It’s not a universal tool, but it covers the common stuff most homeowners are running. If you’re on a standard setup, I wouldn’t overthink it. If you’re running something weird, maybe measure the chain first.
If the chain has a standard 3/8″ pitch and the regular .050 gauge, it’ll sit fine in the guide. I’ve got an older Poulan with a weird low-profile chain and it doesn’t clamp worth a damn. You really need to check the pitch before you buy, not just assume it works because the box says it fits “many” chains.
