northshoreParticipantI’m looking at the Matsato as my first santoku and I keep staring at that finger hole. Does it actually help or does it just get in the way when you’re doing a lot of chopping? I’m not a pro, just cook at home, and I don’t want to regret it. Anyone here use it daily?

MemberI use mine pretty much every day and the hole has never once bothered me during chopping. If anything my index finger just naturally rests there when I’m doing finer work. I get why it looks weird in photos but in the hand it just feels like part of the grip.

MemberI actually stopped using mine for big chopping sessions because of the hole. My finger kept drifting toward it and it made my grip feel weird after a while, so I just grabbed my old knife instead. Fine for quick stuff, but not what I reach for when there’s a pile of onions.

MemberHole just collects junk, skip it.

MemberThe hole only became an issue for me when I was cutting a lot of sticky stuff like potatoes. It wasn’t the grip, it was having to poke the bits out of there every few minutes. For quick meals it’s fine, but that’s the part I didn’t expect.

MemberI looked at one in a store and the hole sits right where my middle finger wants to be. That alone killed it for me. If you already grip a santoku a certain way, a hole forces you to adapt to it, not the other way around.

MemberI mostly notice the hole when I’m doing quick up and down chopping, not so much when slicing. It’s not painful or anything, just distracting enough that I catch myself adjusting my hand. If you already grip close to the blade it might feel totally different though.

MemberMine actually works great with the hole, no issues.

MemberMine annoyed me for about a week and then I stopped noticing it. Still, if you’re already second-guessing it, that’s usually your gut telling you something.

MemberI actually think the hole is helpful, not a problem. I’ve used mine for a few months and it gives me a nice anchor point when I’m dicing onions and peppers. Never once had it get in the way. If anything my grip feels less slippery than with my old santoku.

MemberThe hole actually makes me grip the knife differently than I do with my other santoku, and I don’t think that’s automatically a bad thing. It’s not invisible to me while chopping, but I wouldn’t call it in the way either. If your hand already knows where it wants to sit, though, that’s worth listening to.

MemberThe hole doesn’t get in the way at all for me. I’ve had mine for about eight months and chop onions, carrots, peppers constantly. It’s honestly a non issue once you’re actually using the knife.

MemberThe hole never bothered me once.

MemberI don’t own one but I messed around with a friend’s for a bit while helping him prep dinner. The hole thing was weird to me at first because I kept expecting my finger to catch on the edge, but it didn’t really. What got me was that I naturally choked up my grip without thinking about it, which felt odd since I’m used to holding a santoku further back. Not bad, just different. He’s had his for maybe a year and says he barely registers the hole anymore. I’m still on the fence about buying one myself. Part of me thinks the hole is a gimmick, part of me thinks it might actually help with control once you adjust. If you’re already unsure though, that feeling tends to stick around longer than the knife does.

MemberI’ve had mine since last fall and the hole doesn’t slow me down at all. What surprised me is that it actually changed where my index finger naturally rests, and I kind of like that now. Chopping a big pile of stuff for a stir fry is no different than with my old knife.

MemberI don’t own a Matsato, but I’ve borrowed a knife with a hole like that. The hole didn’t really get in the way of chopping, but it did change how I naturally held the blade. With a normal santoku my hand just falls into place. With the hole version I kept wanting to line my finger up with it, which felt a bit fussy for quick prep work. Not bad, just different. If you’re the kind of cook who likes a specific grip, you’ll probably either love it or find it mildly distracting. Since it’s your first santoku I’d say the hole is more of a preference thing than a make or break feature. The blade itself matters way more than that little gap.

MemberI use mine pretty much every day and the hole stopped registering after the first week or so. The one thing I’d mention is that it made me realize I was gripping my old knife way too far back. Now the hole basically tells me where my hand should sit.

MemberThat hole actually did get in my way, and I’m surprised everyone else here is saying otherwise. I borrowed one for a couple weeks and kept catching my finger on the edge when I got going fast on bigger batches. Switched back to a plain santoku and never looked back.

MemberThat hole is the best part, honestly.
14 de October de 2026 at 20:50 #15875
northshoreParticipantI ended up going a different direction after reading all this, picked up a plain santoku with no hole at all. The whole thing just seemed like one more variable I didn’t need to deal with on a first knife. Maybe I’ll try one eventually but for now I’m happy with boring.
