Daniele RossiMemberI live in a studio apartment with my cat and work long days. Looking for simple enrichment ideas that don’t take up much floor space. I’ve tried a few things but nothing seems to hold her interest. What do you use that actually works when you’re gone all day?

MemberThe thing that finally worked for my cat was just leaving a couple of those crinkle balls in weird spots before I leave, like on the couch or in a shoe. She bats them around for a bit when I’m gone, way more than the fancy stuff I bought. Doesn’t take up any space either since I just toss them wherever.

MemberI’ve had good luck with a cardboard box with a few holes cut in it. Sounds dumb, but my cat uses it way more than any fancy toy I’ve bought, and it folds flat when I need the space.

MemberI keep going back and forth on whether food puzzles actually count as enrichment or just a slower dinner, but that is the one thing that has stuck with my cat when I am gone. Not the fancy kind, just a plain tray with a few compartments that I load with a bit of kibble before I head out. She has to paw at it a little, so it drags out the meal instead of her inhaling everything in two minutes. The downside is she figured out the easy sections pretty fast, so now I have to mix up where the food goes or she gets bored by like week two. I have tried rotating toys and she loses interest way quicker than that. Still not sure if it actually keeps her busy or if she just waits by the door either way, but at least it is something.

MemberMine ignores everything except a window perch.

MemberI used to think the whole enrichment thing was overblown. Like the cat will be fine with a couple toys and a window, right? Then I actually paid attention to what my cat did all day while I was gone and realized she was just sleeping in the same spot for six hours, waking up to eat, then going back to sleep. That bothered me more than I expected.
So I tried a few things over maybe two months and most of it was a waste. She ignored the fancy stuff. What actually changed her behavior was spreading her dry food around the apartment in small amounts before I left. Not a puzzle, just scattered pieces on different surfaces and in a few spots she had to walk to. I figured it would be annoying to clean up but it takes two minutes and she spends a good chunk of the day hunting around for it. She started moving more, and I noticed she was less frantic when I got home.
The thing that surprised me was how much less interested she became in her regular bowl. I still leave some food in there but the scattered stuff is what she goes for first. It also made me realize how bored she probably was before, which is a bit guilt inducing.
I still think a lot of the enrichment stuff people push is overpriced nonsense, but I changed my mind on the basic idea. It does not need to be complicated or expensive, it just needs to make them work for something.

MemberMine mostly just wants a chair by the window.

MemberThe only thing that ever worked for mine was hiding kibble around the place before I left. Under a mug, on the couch cushions, a couple on the windowsill. She’d spend a good chunk of the afternoon hunting those down instead of staring at the door. Not fancy but it’s the one thing I actually kept doing.

Tom RayMemberI’ve had better luck with stuff that changes on its own than with any toy I have to actively rotate. My cat basically ignored the fancy puzzle feeder I bought, but a plain cardboard box with a few holes cut in it and some crumpled paper inside kept her busy for weeks. She’d fish around in there even when I wasn’t home. The trick for me was just leaving it out permanently instead of putting it away, because once it became furniture she treated it like part of her territory. I also noticed she lost interest in anything that stayed in the same spot for too long, so I’d move the box to a different corner every few days. Not exactly high effort, but it worked better than most of the stuff I actually paid for. Small apartment too, so it just lives under my desk when she’s bored with it.

MemberThe thing that finally worked for mine was a bird feeder suction cupped to the outside of the window. She’ll park there for hours just watching. Doesn’t take up any floor space either, which was my whole problem.

MemberI don’t buy that cats need constant entertainment to be okay. Mine is alone about eleven hours on weekdays and what actually keeps her settled is routine, not stuff. Same feeding time, same spots to nap, blinds half open. She moves between three or four preferred spots through the day and that’s it. I tried leaving out extra toys and rotating things and she mostly ignored all of it. The bigger change came when I stopped fussing over her setup so much. A stable, predictable place did more for her than any new thing I brought home. So my take is that a lot of enrichment advice is aimed at owners who feel guilty, not at what the cat actually needs. A calm apartment with a consistent schedule seems to matter more than filling the floor with activities. Some cats do want more stimulation, sure, but mine wants less, not more.

PixelKevinMemberI’ve had the best luck just leaving a couple of those crinkly mylar balls scattered around. They’re cheap, take up zero floor space, and mine bats them under the couch over and over. Not exactly fancy but it’s the one thing that consistently gets used.

MemberI actually think the whole “must keep her busy all day” thing is overblown for a lot of cats. Mine sleeps basically the entire time I’m at work and saves her energy for when I get home, so I stopped feeling guilty about leaving her with not much. The enrichment that matters happens in the hour or two we actually spend together.

MemberMine never cared about the fancy stuff either. What actually gets used in my place is a cardboard box with a couple of holes cut in it, and I just swap it for a fresh one every few weeks. Takes up basically no room and she treats it like a new toy each time.

MemberI actually went the opposite direction with my setup. Everyone talks about leaving stuff out for the cat to interact with while they’re gone, but what finally clicked for mine was giving her a spot where she could watch me leave and come back. I moved a little perch thing near the front door, nothing fancy, just a low stool with a blanket on it, and she started using it every single day. I think the comings and goings themselves became the entertainment. She hears my keys, hops up there, and watches the hallway through the gap under the door. It sounds boring but she’s way more into that than any toy I’ve left out.
The other thing that surprised me is that she mostly ignores whatever I set up before I leave. I used to stress about rotating stuff and setting out new things every morning, but she’d just sleep through it all and then want to play the second I got home. So now I don’t bother with elaborate setups. I just make sure she has a couple of spots near windows and that door perch, and honestly she seems fine. Not saying that works for every cat, but mine clearly cares more about the routine and the watching than about having a bunch of stuff to bat around. I kind of stopped buying enrichment gadgets after that.

MemberIf I were in your spot I’d honestly just try rotating a few small things instead of leaving everything out at once. Mine gets bored of the same toys within a couple days, so I swap them around and it’s like new stuff again. Takes two seconds and no floor space.

MemberRotation never did anything for mine. She just ignores whatever gets swapped in and goes back to the same one toy she’s had for ages. Leaving a couple of things out that she actually likes has worked way better than trying to keep it fresh.
