Does the Qinux BitBip 89 actually save your progress properly? I’ve used other retro sticks where saves get wiped after a power cycle. Not trying to lose hours in an RPG. If it works, fine, but I want to know before I bother.

Saves hold on mine, but only if you exit properly.

I’ve had mine for a couple months and the saves have stuck around fine, even after unplugging it for a week. I only really use it for short arcade stuff though, so I can’t speak to long RPG sessions. If I were you I’d just test it with one game first before sinking hours into anything.

Mine wiped an RPG save after a week unplugged.

Save states are fine on mine but the in-game battery saves are the weak spot. I played through most of a longer RPG over maybe three weeks and the save would stick as long as I kept using the thing regularly. Then it sat in a drawer for a bit while I was busy and when I came back the file was gone. Not the whole system, just that one game. Save states I made manually were still there though. So now I just lean on those instead of trusting the normal save menu. It’s a bit annoying but easy enough to work around once you know. If you’re the type who plays a game start to finish without long breaks you’ll probably be fine. If you bounce between games like I do, just make a save state before you put the controller down.

Save states are usually fine on these sticks since they’re just writing to the SD card, but the real mess is knowing when it actually saved. I had a cheap one a while back and the save state menu was confusing enough that I wasn’t sure if it went through until I reloaded. Sometimes it worked, sometimes I’d come back and the slot was empty because I hit the wrong button combo. It’s less about the hardware and more about whether you trust the emulator’s menu. If the BitBip 89 has a clear save state screen where you can see the slots and confirm it wrote something, you’re probably okay. If it’s one of those vague “quick save” things with no feedback, that’s where people get burned. I’d just test it once with a throwaway game before committing to anything long. Takes two minutes and saves you the headache later.

The save state side has been fine on mine. I mainly play older platformers and a bit of arcade stuff, so I mostly lean on save states rather than in game saves. I’ve turned mine off at the wall plenty of times and the states were still there when I came back, even after a couple of weeks of not touching it. The only thing I noticed is that it doesn’t always tell you clearly when a state actually got written, so I got into the habit of loading the state right after saving just to make sure it stuck. Bit paranoid maybe, but it takes two seconds.

That’s the part I’d focus on if you’re worried about losing RPG progress. In game battery saves are a different story and I’ve seen enough mixed results on these sticks in general that I wouldn’t treat them as reliable. For quick pick up and play sessions though, the save state thing has done what I needed. I don’t really mess with the menu much beyond that, so I can’t say how it behaves if you’re swapping games a lot or messing with settings. Mine just sits on one TV and gets used a few times a week.

I’ve only used mine for a couple of weeks but the save states have held up every time I turn it off. No idea about long RPGs though, I mostly play stuff I can finish in one sitting.

Save states have been solid for me so far.

Save states worked when I bothered testing them, but I don’t trust them for anything long. One power cut and I lost a couple hours in a platformer, so now I just leave the stick running if I’m mid game.

Mine’s been fine for the games I actually finish, but I don’t really do long RPGs, so maybe that’s why. I mostly hop between quick stuff and the saves just stay put.

Saves survived a full power strip cutoff for me.

Long RPGs are the one place I’d still be cautious. My saves have survived normal shutdowns just fine, but I had one session where the stick got unplugged mid-game and that save was gone.

A couple of saves got wiped on mine after I left it unplugged for a week or so. Nothing dramatic, but it happened twice, so I don’t fully trust it for anything long either.

Fine, I’ll just test it myself then.
